Der Verein bezweckt die Errichtung und den Betrieb einer Ombudsstelle gemäss Artikel 74 ff. des Finanzdienstleistungsgesetzes für Finanzinstitute, Finanzdienstleister und Kundenberaterinnen und -berater (nachfolgend Finanzdienstleister). Er errichtet zu diesem Zweck Schlichtungsstellen in allen vier Landesteilen. Die Tätigkeit der Ombudsstelle erstreckt sich auf das gesamte Gebiet der Schweiz und erfolgt in den Sprachen Deutsch, Französisch und Italienisch. Der Vorstand kann für einzelne Schlichtungsstellen weitere Sprachen vorsehen. Der Verein ist nicht gewinnstrebig. Er kann jedoch die erforderlichen Rücklagen bilden, welche zur Sicherung der Tätigkeit angemessen sind. Der Verein kann ein Schiedsgericht errichten, das den der Ombudsstelle angeschlossenen Finanzdienstleistern sowie deren Kunden im Falle des Scheiterns einer Vermittlung zu freiwilligen Verfügung steht. Der Verein sammelt und verwaltet die vom Gesetz vorgesehenen Daten betreffend die angeschlossenen Finanzdienstleister und über seine eigene Tätigkeit.
