La Fondation a initialement été constituée pour assister les projets de recherche concernant le naufrage dit « d'Anticythère » et le mécanisme du même nom. Cependant, et en fonction de l'état d'avancement de ces projets et des ressources disponibles, la Fondation pourra étendre son rayon d'activité à d'autres recherches concernant l'antiquité. La Fondation pourra financer directement ces projets de recherche et les activités qui en découlent: congrès et rencontres scientifiques, publications, production de matériel éducatif, de matériel multimédia et d'expositions. Elle pourra à ce propos aussi faire appel à des fonds ou Fondations tiers. Dans le cadre des buts fixés, la Fondation œuvre en Suisse et à l'étranger. La Fondation n'a pas de but lucratif et ne vise aucun gain. Les fondateurs se réservent expressément le droit de modifier le but en vertu de l'article 86a du code civil suisse.
