Das Werk hat gemeinnützigen Charakter. Im Interesse einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung fördert es die Aus- und Weiterbildung von Studierenden aus den Entwicklungsländern für die Entwicklungsländer. Diese Ausbildung kann in der Schweiz, in ihrem Herkunftsland oder in einem anderen Land stattfinden. Für die wirksame Erfüllung dieses Zweckes wurden die Justinus-Vereine geschaffen. Das Werk übt eine koordinierende Funktion gegenüber den Justinus-Vereinen aus. Es nimmt insbesondere die operative Führung der Studentenhäuser der Justinus-Vereine wahr und unterstützt diese in religiöser, kultureller und finanzieller Hinsicht. Das Werk kann bewegliches und unbewegliches Vermögen erwerben und besitzen. Es setzt seine finanziellen Mittel zur Förderung des Vereinszwecks ein.
