Er führt dazu eine 'Registration Agency', welche gemäss Vorgaben der ISAN International Agency solche Nummern abgibt und Auskunft über die bestimmten AV-Werken zugeteilten Nummern erteilt. Der Verein ist bestrebt, dass ISAN möglichst rasch, umfassend und sorgfältig in die Praxis umgesetzt und in der Produktion und Auswertung audiovisueller Werke weltweit angewandt wird. Der Verein verfolgt keinen kommerziellen Zweck.
