La Fondazione ha per scopo l'organizzazione, il finanziamento e l'amministrazione del Museo d'Arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano. La Fondazione promuove l'attività del Museo in un'ottica di arricchimento culturale e di sviluppo economico e sociale del territorio di riferimento. Attraverso il Museo la Fondazione contribuisce ad animare la vita culturale del Cantone Ticino e della città di Lugano nel settore delle arti figurative e visive. La Fondazione promuove e sviluppa contatti e accordi con istituzioni pubbliche e private nell'ambito della sua missione. La Fondazione procede in particolare: alla valorizzazione ed allo studio del patrimonio artistico del Cantone Ticino ed al sostegno della produzione artistica locale di qualità; alla conservazione ed allo studio delle opere d'arte in gestione della Fondazione; all'acquisizione di opere d'arte da destinare alla costituzione della propria collezione o da destinare alle collezioni degli enti fondatori; all'esposizione al pubblico di opere d'arte di interesse locale, nazionale e internazionale; all'organizzazione di manifestazioni culturali (esposizioni temporanee, conferenze ecc.) ed alla partecipazione ad iniziative promosse da terzi; alla collaborazione con le scuole, gli enti, le associazioni e le persone che operano nel settore delle arti figurative e visive con scopi di interesse pubblico.
