Die Caritas Zürich ist vom Diözesanbischof beauftragt, im Kanton Zürich Sozialarbeit zu leisten. Dazu führt sie ein Kompetenzzentrum für soziale Fragen. Es ergänzt und unterstützt pfarreiliche und überpfarreiliche Organisationen in ihren diakonischen Aufgaben. Caritas Zürich gibt sich dazu ein Leitbild. Der Verein verfolgt keine kommerziellen Zwecke und erstrebt keinen Gewinn, aber er sucht mittelfristig eine betriebswirtschaftlich ausgeglichene Rechnung. Im besonderen obliegen ihr folgende Aufgaben: a) Beratung, Bildung und Projekte für Frauen, Männer und Familien in Not, unabhängig von Nationalität, Ausländerstatus, Weltanschauung und Religionszugehörigkeit. b) Planung und Koordination von zeitgemässer Sozialarbeit, von innovativer und solidarischer Hilfe und Diakonie im Kanton Zürich, in Ergänzung zur Hilfe der öffentlichen Hand und anderen privaten Organisationen. c) Kooperationen mit kirchlichen, privaten und öffentlichen Institutionen, um soziale Integration zu stärken. d) Zusammenarbeit von professionellen Fachleuten und freiwilligen Mitarbeitenden, um eine möglichst grosse Wirkung zu erzielen. e) Grundlagen- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, um die Bevölkerung für soziale Brennpunkte zu sensibilisieren. f) Überregionale Kooperation im Caritas-Netz und mit Caritas Schweiz.
